Juan Gutierrez is a Co-founder and Senior Consultant at Sostanza, bringing over a decade of global experience in the cannabis industry. He holds a BSc in horticulture and has a deep knowledge of commercial plant production, facility operation, and team management. Before Sostanza, he was the Director of Cultivation at MedReleaf and later led assessment and improvement programs for Aurora Cannabis's cultivation facilities worldwide. At Sostanza, he has designed over 50 cannabis facilities worldwide and supported the operations of many more.
From Passionate Growers to a Vision for Thailand’s Cannabis Industry
When I first met the founders of Blossom Business Farm, they weren’t industry giants or corporate investors. They were two passionate, small-scale growers who had spent years perfecting their craft.Like many new entrepreneurs entering this emerging market, they dreamed of building a legitimate, world-class operation but didn’t know where to begin.
They found Sostanza after watching several CannaCribs episodes and learning about our cannabis cultivation consulting work around the world. Soon after, they reached out to us for guidance on how to turn their vision into a professional, compliant, and scalable business in Thailand.
The First Meeting: Inspiration at Hollymood Farms
To help them understand what’s possible when science meets design, I invited them to visit one of our completed projects near Bangkok, Hollymood Farms,.
The Hollymood team was kind enough to open their doors and host the Blossom founders for a full walkthrough of their operation. It’s a facility we designed and supported through our full suite of services:
financial modeling
cannabis facility design
cultivation and post-harvest SOPs
on-site grower training
Walking through Hollymood, the Blossom founders could visualize their own future: clean workflows, energy-efficient systems, and a cultivation environment built for precision and consistency. That tour sealed the deal, they were determined to build their own certified medical cannabis facility in Phuket.
Designing the Blueprint for Success
Back in 2023, our team at Sostanza began the full design process for what would become Blossom Business Farm. We approached it the same way we do every major project: integrating engineering, cultivation science, and operational flow into one cohesive blueprint.
Our complete cannabis cultivation facility design package included:
Complete room layouts for mother, veg, flower, and post-harvest spaces.
Priva-controlled, climate-zoned HVAC and dehumidification plans built for the tropical humidity of Phuket.
A custom fertigation system sized precisely for their crop rotation and nutrient recipes.
A biosecurity and workflow strategy aligned with international GACP standards.
Once finished, we handed the complete technical documentation, CAD drawings, equipment lists, and system models directly to the local architects and builders the founders had selected.
That gave them both independence and structure: they could oversee their own construction while relying on our framework and remote consulting.
Building a State-of-the-Art Facility
Constructing a highly controlled indoor cultivation space from scratch in Phuket was far from easy.High heat and humidity, inconsistent utilities, and limited local experience with cannabis infrastructure created new challenges at every stage.
As part of our Complete Design Package, we worked directly with Blossom’s engineers, architects, and builders to align the entire project with GACP standards and high-performance cultivation requirements.
Our support included reviewing architectural and MEP plans, validating HVAC load calculations, refining air mixing and zoning, optimizing fertigation loops, adjusting drainage slopes, and resolving workflow and material-flow bottlenecks in real time.
We also guided material selection, energy-load management, and redundancy design to ensure the facility would be reliable year-round.
That collaborative approach paid off: even with no previous large-scale experience, the founders delivered a facility that met every engineering and compliance benchmark.
Training, SOPs, and the Path to Certification
Once construction wrapped up, we shifted into operations mode. The Blossom team onboarded our customized Cultivation and Post-Harvest SOP Package adapted to their specific equipment, genetics, and production goals. Thanks to their existing small-scale cultivation foundation, they were able to integrate the SOPs quickly with a mix of remote and on-site training.
Our support model combined weekly video calls, unlimited messaging, and continuous data-driven performance reviews. Because they followed the Sostanza system precisely, from plant care routines to traceability forms, they achieved GACP certification quickly after starting operation. That early success confirmed what we always tell clients: when you build your foundation on validated processes, compliance follows naturally.
From Growers to Certified Operators
Watching the Blossom founders evolve from their small-scale operations into professional cultivators has been one of the most rewarding parts of my work. They learned how to manage people, monitor irrigation data, interpret plant analytics, and make data-based decisions. The heart of cannabis cultivation optimization. Our relationship evolved, too. What began as a design contract became an ongoing mentorship, the essence of our approach.
The Next Chapter: Connecting to Global Markets
By 2025, Blossom Business Farm was operating entirely on the Sostanza methodology. Our designs, SOPs, and cultivation models guide daily decisions. The next phase of their journey is commercial: building brand recognition and finding the right buyers for their certified flower.
Through our global network of buyers, distributors, and partners, we’re helping them open doors to export opportunities and strategic collaborations. This is where technical excellence meets business development, turning strong production into a sustainable enterprise.
Lessons from Blossom
Looking back, Blossom’s story represents what’s possible when expertise and trust align. Two growers partnered with the right cannabis consulting team and transformed an empty plot in Phuket into a certified medical cannabis operation.
Their journey proves that success in cannabis isn’t about starting big, it’s about starting right. With a clear plan, structured systems, and a team willing to learn, any operation can reach international standards.
Reflections and Takeaways
For me personally, Blossom embodies the values of both Sostanza and Priva: helping cultivators around the world grow smarter, more efficiently, and more sustainably.
Every project is a partnership. We provide the technical precision through financial modeling, irrigation design, SOPs, and compliance frameworks but the client brings the heart and persistence that make the system thrive.
