Philipp Matzneller, PhD is a world-class cannabis cultivation scientist and consultant whose work spans academia, large-scale operations, and cutting-edge horticulture. As Co-Founder & Senior Consultant at Sostanza he provides expert guidance to growers internationally on design, operational optimization, and business strategy for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse cultivation globally.
Philipp has worked directly with teams across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa to develop precise cultivation plans, implement trialing programs, and train cultivation teams to consistently deliver high-yield, high-quality production. His work includes GACP and EU-GMP compliant facility design, genetics integration, and full-cycle operational support for companies entering competitive medical and recreational markets.
Previously, Philipp served as Senior Scientist of Cultivation and later Director of Applied Cultivation at MedReleaf and Aurora Cannabis, where he managed multi-facility research teams conducting trials that delivered measurable increases in yield, quality, and consistency.
He holds a PhD in Agroclimatology from Humboldt University of Berlin, where his dissertation examined the impact of climate change on sour cherry cultivation and practical adaptation strategies. Philipp also earned BSc and MSc degrees in Agriculture from the University of Bologna, Italy.
Across all roles, he has established a reputation for applying rigorous science to real-world cultivation challenges, helping producers achieve operational excellence and set new standards for performance.
